Karen

Beginning in 2010, Karen Luukkonen has set up a table at THE HUB in Red Deer, Alberta every Friday from 12-3, selling beautiful handicrafts from Thailand and India with all proceeds going to the Somali Women's Scholarship Program. Thanks to Karen and her hub helpers Maureen and Judy, for volunteering her time to help make a difference for women in Somalia!

"In Canada we are so blessed to live in a stable and peaceful nation. We often have an abundance of opportunity and possessions. Woman are free to be strong and make our own decisions. Somalia, on the other hand, is the number one failed nation in the world, according to the United Nations. Woman have little power. Their children have little hope of a better life. The heart of every mother wants to provide for her children and encourage them to work for a happy, independant life. Normal in Canada... but not very easy in Somalia. Each woman we send to school gives this country hope that there will be a better tomorrow. I am so amazed at how easily $1000 can be raised. It is a relatively small amount in Canada but it's huge to be able to change a life in Somalia. Every Friday at the Hub, everyone gets very excited about how quickly we are reaching our personal goal. The women of Somalia are my sisters. We share the same feelings of loss, lack of control and love for our children. Together we can take back control. We all just need a bit of help from our friends."
