community empowerment

Community based initiatives educate and empower women giving them the tools they need to break free from limiting belief patterns and the societal conditioning that has oppressed them. By using culturally sensitive approaches, our programs are a response to what Somali women themselves are striving to accomplish and that the community has identified as important. Our work focuses on cultivating leadership through the promotion of sport and by providing materials for female led peace-building and advocacy movements.

Leadership in Sport

Playing a sport isn't just about the game. Participation cultivates teamwork, friendship, communication, leadership, physical fitness and personal empowerment- all important aspects of any young woman's life. In Somalia, over two decades of war has eroded a cultural heritage that traditionally encourages women to engage in activities which build her personal capacities. Today, a woman's right to play sports has been restricted and in parts of Somalia, forbidden. Despite this, women in Somalia continue to come together as teams dedicated to sport, all the while demanding equality and social change. With extremely limited resources, these courageous athletes usually practice without proper equipment, shoes or athletic courts. The opportunity to join a sponsored and supported sports team is a significant way for a woman to improve her daily life and health while becoming a role model to the females around her.

Advocacy

somali womenDeveloping advocacy skills in Somali women is a significant way to improve women's social, legal, political, economic and cultural status. Advocacy may take place through a variety of actions and strategies, from demonstrations and protests to meetings and dialogue. Learning which strategy to use, and when to use it, can be the beginning of creating social change. Advocacy is a tool Somali women use to take a stand against policies and practices that don't empower them.

Peace Building and Conflict Resolution

The women of Somalia continue to play a key role in addressing conflicts on a daily basis and we aim to build the capacities of women in the peace building process. Sustainable peace requires exploration of indigenous conflict resolution processes traditionally used by communities and we provide women with enough information to lead community based discussions and begin project planning to facilitate a peaceful environment.

Empowerment means increasing the spiritual, political, social, or economic strength of individuals and communities by developing confidence in their own capacities
